Lyre vs Muse: your project on your computer, or a personal agent in the cloud
Muse is Meta’s personal agent for everyday tasks across connected apps, running in a secure cloud computer; Lyre’s Chords runs background assistants in your own project with the model and permissions you choose.

Who each workflow fits
Muse is aimed at personal, consumer tasks. Chords is aimed at work that belongs to a project on a computer you control. The overlap is the background assistant model, not the tools each one can reach.
Lyre may fit when you…
- Want the assistant inside a repository, terminal and toolchain on your own computer.
- Want to choose the model and provider rather than using the vendor’s model.
- Need project files to remain in place and editable outside Lyre.
- Want interactive app previews and App-only sharing for paired devices.
Muse may fit when you…
- Want help with everyday consumer tasks across Gmail, Calendar, Instagram and shops.
- Want the agent to keep working without your computer being awake.
- Prefer a managed app with a free tier and no host to configure.
- Are in a market where Muse and its connectors are available.
How Lyre and Muse compare
| Question | Lyre | Muse |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Chords is Lyre’s always-on agent system. Each Chords bot is a background assistant working in your project on your computer. Early access, enabled in Experiments. | Meta’s personal AI agent. It plans and completes everyday tasks across connected apps and websites, with a main conversation, side chats and a goals view. |
| Where the work runs | On the computer you select. Project files, terminals and agent processes stay there, and that host must stay awake and reachable. | On Muse Secure VM, a dedicated cloud computer with its own browser, file system and terminal. Meta says a separate Sentinel agent gates its internet access. |
| What it can reach | Your project, terminal tools and configured MCP connections on your computer, including authorized Slack and other service tools. | Consumer connectors such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Instagram in supported markets, plus websites it browses and forms it fills in. |
| Account and model | No Lyre account is required for local use. You choose the provider and model for each Chords bot; that provider keeps its own account and billing. | A Meta account and the Muse app. Meta operates the model and the cloud environment, and offers a free tier with subscription plans for more use. |
| Approvals | A Chords bot asks before anything you have not approved. Newly discovered connected operations start with Ask first on, and every source rule needs its own review. | Muse checks before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase, with an activity audit trail and adjustable caution settings. |
| Where you can use it | The desktop app plus a paired phone, browser or another computer connected to the host. | iOS, Android and muse.ai, with WhatsApp and Mac support described in public coverage; availability varies by market. |
| App preview and sharing | Open an interactive preview of the running app and share one app with App-only access. Preview and agent lifecycles are independent. | Produces artifacts such as documents, pages and dashboards inside Muse. Public material does not describe an interactive app-preview client with app-only sharing. |
| Pricing | Free for local use. Lyre Pro is $15 per month and Lyre AI is $100 per month. Model usage is billed by the provider you choose. | Free for most everyday use, with subscription plans for more. Check Meta’s current pricing and market availability. |
Meta designed Muse to act across the consumer internet from its own cloud computer. Lyre designed Chords to keep working where your project and tools already are.
When Muse is the better choice
- Your tasks are personal and consumer-facing rather than repository work.
- You want the vendor to manage the computer, credentials and security boundary.
- You want a free tier for everyday use and do not want to configure a host.
- You need the agent to continue while your own computer is closed.
Lyre does not replace Muse, and Muse’s connectors are not available in Lyre. If your work mostly happens in consumer apps, Muse is the closer fit.
Questions people ask before choosing
Is Lyre’s Chords the same thing as Muse?
No. Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent, built around a secure cloud computer and consumer apps and websites. Chords is Lyre’s early-access system of background assistants that run in projects on your own computer.
Where does each one keep my data?
Chords keeps project files and agent processes on the computer you select; prompts and selected context go to the model provider you configure. Meta says Muse runs on Muse Secure VM, a dedicated cloud computer that stores connected-service credentials.
Can a Chords bot shop, book or send messages for me?
A Chords bot does what its configured tools and permissions allow on your computer and through connected services. Lyre does not include Muse’s consumer connectors, and a Chords bot cannot act outside the permissions you approve.
Do I need an account to use Chords?
Local use of Lyre does not require a Lyre account. A model provider account is still required, and hosted features, remote viewing and Lyre AI follow their own plan facts.
Does a Chords bot keep running when I close my laptop?
No. The host must remain awake and reachable. Muse is designed to keep working in Meta’s cloud, which is the main availability difference between the two.
